February fool's day

The last month of winter
lasts three to four times as long
as the first month.
Don’t believe it
when the light hangs in the sky later
than reddened eyes,
as late as 6:30 or 7 despite
the whistling February wind
tearing clouds into ragged strips—
“Six more weeks,” they chant,
and the nights are each at least twice
as long as January was.
There are more days in February
than the rest of the year combined,
than icy glints in the styrofoam glitter snow.
Only a fool would wait until March
to spring onto the icy sun and kick
it open to get the fire started again.
